More about Evan's Glasses

Evan has new glasses to correct for tunnel vision. He put them on today and the first thing he said was, "Everything looks closer!" and "There's dirt on the ground!" and "Let's take a walk and look around!" He really wanted to be an observer, so I pushed him in the stroller -- which really needs to stop, considering that means I'm heaving two-thirds of my body weight around town. "I see trees! And buildings! And I see grass! And sticks!"
The video below shows him actually moving his eyes. It's amazing what you don't notice when it doesn't happen. I've never seen him move his eyes like that before! They are usually locked dead forward, and I guess I just never realized it. Totally astounding.
The behavioral optometrist diagnosed him with "convergence insufficiency" and "oculomotor dysfunction." I would say that these glasses have made an enormous difference for both of these issues immediately. Wow.
They definitely do their  job, but I guess they leave something to be desired as far as Evan is concerned. On our walk, we stopped by Jonathan's office so he could check out the new glasses. Evan said, "Hey, Daddy, what do you think about my new glasses?"
Jonathan said, "I think they look good."
Evan replied, "No they don't."
"Yeah they do, buddy."
"No," then Evan paused for effect. "They don't." Sounds like he's developing fashion sense.

Oh my God, Christina!! I'm so happy for Evan!! Wow, what a whole new world this will open up for him! That poor baby! I'll bet he had no way to verbalize what his vision was like before, huh? How did you guys find the problem? I'm so curious to see the changes this brings about for him. Keep us updated, please. :) And, for the record, I think he looks very handsome in his spectacles!

Oh wow. This is so big for him! I'll bet the difference for him is just breathtaking. And I'm sure some things will start coming together for him behaviorally and emotionally. When your vision is wonky, it can throw everything off. Will he do vision therapy? It helped A a bunch.

It's amazing the differences that are apparent right away! Who knew. I'm pretty hopeful that this is at least one piece of the puzzle we can put back together. As far as the vision therapy goes, the doc thinks it will take about 2 to 3 years of it. But the jury's still out as to whether it will be covered by insurance. In the meantime, he's given Evan's OT a bunch of recommendations of things to do there. It really is amazing.
